Ghana, the last African hope at the football World Cup, have been knocked out of the tournament in agonising fashion losing to Uruguay on penalties.
With the game locked up at 1-all deep into extra time Ghana were awarded a penalty that should have seen them through to the semi-finals.
However the Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan missed from the spot and Uruguay made their most of their second chance winning the penalty shootout 4-2.
Uruguay now face a semi-final showdown with the Netherlands after the Dutch shocked five time world champions Brazil 2-1 in their quarterfinal clash.
Argentina play Germany and Spain face Paraguay tomorrow morning to determine the second semi-final.
