Papua New Guinea will take its biggest ever team of athletes to next month's Olympic Games.

Eight competitors have so far been confirmed across five sports: swimming, athletics, weightlifting, judo and taekwondo.

Among them is weightlifter Steven Kari, who came second in last week's Oceania Weightlifting Champs, and veteran swimmer Ryan Pini, who recently swam five personal bests at the Australian Championships.

Team PNG Chef de Mission Syd Yates says Pini and their other athletes are spread all over the world during the build up to the olympics.

"He's been off in China at a high altitiude training camp and he's been back swimming in the Oceania Championships in Noumea recently, and he's going back to China as part of his preparations. In athletics they're all off based in Europe at the moment and they're on the circuit over there working very hard. They've improved and we've had a couple of people who did pretty well at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi so hopefully they will kick on from there."
