Part of the Remutaka Hill Road will be down to one lane for up to six weeks due to a slip near the road.
The State Highway 2 route between Wellington and Wairarapa was under stop/go management on Friday afternoon so contractors could increase drainage around the landslide.
Following site inspections, the Transport Agency had made a decision to put a 24/7 northbound lane closure at the underslip site.
It said the lane closure was needed to protect the road from further damage and ensure public safety.
It is expected to take between four and six weeks until repairs are completed.
Drivers can expect short delays at the underslip site until the road is restored to two lanes and should allow extra travel time when using State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill.
