The Cook Islands Prime Minister, Dr Robert Woonton, says he will dissolve parliament by midweek in order for general elections to be held in September.
The timing means that the government will comply with constitutional requirements that elections are held five years after the last one and within 90 days of parliament being dissolved.
Dr Woonton says he will advise the Queen's Representative who will make the announcement by the 15th of June.
"The time has come to go to the election, as prescribed by the constitution. Parliament has risen already last week - we've done all our legislation and we're ready to go to the polls. But the term of this parliament ends on the 15th of June by which date I have to announce the new election."
Dr Robert Woonton says cabinet will make a decision on an election date tomorrow.
