The All Blacks scored the only two tries of the game and were behind 12-7 at half time.

Jerome Kaino touched down after just six minutes, while replacement Beauden Barrett scored early in the second half.

Asked about being in the final Richie McCaw said it was what we came here to do to give ourselves the opportunity and we did it the hard way today but we always knew that was going to be the case and it's exciting to get a crack at the final next week.

Kaino was sin-binned just before half time for kicking a ball away, while the Springbok winger Bryan Habana also spent time on the sideline for a professional foul.

"At the end of the first half it was our discipline that let us down keeping the Springboks in the game, so sometimes when you are under adversity and are down to 14 you just find that little bit extra and everyone made up for that, we held our composure well and played at the right end of the field and the points came," said McCaw.

It was far from an impressive performance by the All Blacks, who conceded too many penalties.

However, they still did enough to control the game.

The Springboks didn't offer much on attack and relied on the boot of their kickers to stay in touch.

The second semi-final is tomorrow between Australia and Argentina at Twickenham.
