Sport: Aussie golfer Jake McLeod leads in Noumea

Australian golfer Jake McLeod fired an eight under par 63 to open up a two shot lead after the opening round of the South Pacific Open Championship in New Caledonia.

The 22 year old Queenslander's round was highlighted by back-to-back eagles on the par five 14th and par four 15th at the Tina Golf Course in Noumea.

Another Australian, Jason Norris, fired a six-under par 65 to be outright second behind McLeod.

Kirianu Blais is the best placed local in a tie for 17th position at two under par.

Meanwhile Fiji's Sam Lee opened with a birdie but also managed five bogeys in a round of two over par 73.

He's 10 shots off the lead in a share of 47th place.

$AU140,000 in prizemoney is up for grabs this week along with Official World Golf Ranking points.
