Drug firms team up with WADA

06:35 am on 7 July 2010

Major drug companies are teaming with the World Anti-Doping Agency to help identify medicinal compounds that have the potential to be misused by athletes.

WADA's director-general, New Zealander David Howman has signed a formal declaration with the president of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations whose member companies include the likes of GlaxoSmithKline and Merck & Co.

A major concern is the growth of trafficking in performance-enhancing drugs, and Interpol warned earlier this year there's almost as much money, if not more, coming out of performance-enhancing drugs as there is in the illegal drug trade.
