The service was shut down for at least two hours yesterday for a union meeting to discuss stalled contract talks.

The dispute is over pay and arrangements for work on statutory holidays.

Rail and Maritime Transport Union general secretary Wayne Butson said yesterday's action produced the first complete shutdown of the commuter network since 1994.

He said his members' rejection of the employer's offer would be taken to them at a new meeting on 10 October.
