A man and a woman have been remanded in custody after a brief court appearance in Hastings on a charge of aggravated wounding of a police officer.
Police say Community Constable Alan Daly was assaulted in the township of Clive on Tuesday afternoon after he stopped a vehicle carrying two people suspected of a shoplifting spree in Napier.
Mr Daly was treated in Hawke's Bay hospital for a fractured eye socket and a possible broken nose, and has been discharged.
Joy Leaf, 30, and Lance Pirini, 31, both of Auckland, are charged with aggravated wounding, stealing a car and with theft over an unrelated incident in Taupo.
They are remanded in custody until the end of September.
