After the mayhem of the first day when England were skittled for 85 and 20 wickets fell, the World Cup champions appeared to have seized control when they reached 171 for one early on another sweltering afternoon.
But they lost seven wickets for 77 runs as Ireland, playing in only their third test match ever and first against England, hit back with Mark Adair taking three wickets.
Sam Curran (37) and Stuart Broad (21 not out) frustrated Ireland's hopes with a counter-attack before flashes of lightning forced the umpires to take the players off.
Ireland, who lost their only two previous matches since gaining test status in 2017, will need to take the last England wicket early on Friday before setting about chasing the total.
No go for Ko at Evian
New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko look set to miss the cut after a forgettable first round at the penultimate women's major of the year.

The former world No 1 has carded a seven-over par 78 to be right towards the bottom of the leaderboard after day one of the Evian Championship in France.
Despite heading into the event after her best result of the season, Ko put up five bogeys, a triple bogey and just one birdie to be way down in a tie for 112th.
Just six players recorded a worse score than the 22-year-old.
Ko is 14 shots behind leader, the US's Paula Creamer, who shot a seven-under par round of 64.
Ko, who won the first of her two major titles when she took out the Evian Championship in 2015, has slipped to 21 in the world rankings.
She has just four top 10 finishes from 14 tournaments this year.
Shields suffers foot injury
Former Hurricanes flanker Brad Shields has been withdrawn from England's training camp in Italy due to a ligament injury in his foot.

New Zealand-born and raised Shields sustained the injury during England's 12-day heat camp in Treviso aimed at helping players acclimatise to conditions expected during this year's Rugby World Cup in Japan.
The 28-year-old, who is a former New Zealand under-20 representative and was capped 100 times for the Hurricanes, will be replaced in the squad by Harlequins' Alex Dombrandt.
"Shields will undergo assessment in England to understand the extent of the injury ..... Quins forward Dombrandt will fly out to Italy to join the squad later," the RFU said on Twitter.
England will play four World Cup warm-up games - at home and away to Wales and at home against Ireland and Italy - before heading to Japan where they kick off their campaign against Tonga on September 22.

Johnson responds to pressure
Cronulla coach John Morris has praised under-fire stars Shaun Johnson and Josh Dugan after they inspired the Sharks to a drought-breaking 16-14 win over North Queensland.
Both of the club's marquee men have come under heavy scrutiny over the last month-and-a-half as the Sharks' season, which promised so much, looked in danger of coming to a spluttering halt.

The Sharks came from 14-4 down to break a five-game losing streak on Thursday night and provisionally move level with eight-placed Newcastle on 18 points.
Johnson came into the game having had the finger pointed at him after the side failed to land the killer blow during a string of close losses.
Four of those five defeats were by two points or less and Johnson's game management was questioned as well as his goalkicking.
But he came away with two try assists - including throwing a lovely ball for Dugan's crucial 65th minute four-pointer, which got his side back in the game.
Hayne pleads not guilty
Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne has pleaded not guilty to charges that he raped a woman last year.
Hayne is accused of attacking a woman in Newcastle, north of Sydney, last September and was arrested in December.

The two-time winner of the NRL's player of the year award is not tied to any club after he was dropped by the Parramatta Eels at the end of last season.
Hayne will remain on bail until a trial begins in May next year.
Police began investigating after hearing allegations that a woman had been assaulted by a man she met on social media.
Hayne, who has played 11 Tests for Australia, briefly switched to American football with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, before returning to Australia the following year.
Tall Ferns title defence on track
The Tall Ferns have made it two wins from two outings at the William Jones Cup in Taiwan after defeating Korea 73-61.

Ahead by 18 points at three-quarter time, the New Zealand women's side gave valuable playing time to some less experienced players in the final period, enabling Korea to close to within ten points.
As she had the previous day in the win against the Philippines, it was Olympian Micaela Cocks that led the way with 20 points and it was the Kiwi captain that sunk free-throws down the stretch to seal victory.
Stella Beck and Penina Davidson supported Cocks with 13 points apiece, Tessa Boagni had 10 points and Kalani Purcell was all hustle with seven points, nine rebounds, eight assists and a couple of steals.
Defending champions at the tournament, New Zealand next face Chinese Taipei B on Friday night.
Report: Whyte returned positive test
British heavyweight boxer Dillian Whyte has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance for a second time before his victory against Oscar Rivas at the weekend.
He served a two-year ban from 2012 to 2014 for unknowingly taking an illegal supplement.

Whyte is the mandatory challenger to WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
Whyte controversially beat New Zealand's Joseph Parker in a fight in London last year.
Representatives for Whyte have declined to comment.
Meanwhile Argentine boxer Hugo Santillan has become the second boxer to die in three days after being injured in a title fight.
The 23-year-old collapsed in the ring at the weekend after his WBC Latino Silver lightweight bout in Argentina ended in a draw.
Russian fighter Maxim Dadashev died earlier this week after his IBF light welterweight fight in Maryland last week.
Murray brothers back together
Scottish tennis player Andy Murray will team up with his brother Jamie in the doubles at the Washington Open next week.
The tournament is Murray's fourth since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in January and his first on a hard court.
The brothers, 32 and 33 respectively, played together to help Great Britain win the Davis Cup in 2015.
