Te Reo guardians meet in Waikato

09:06 am on 20 February 2015

The guardians of Te Reo Maori from across the country are in the Waikato region talking about what they want from the Maori Language Bill.

The legislation is being reviewed by the Maori Affairs select committee, as well as a group appointed by the Minister of Maori Development, Te Ururoa Flavell.

It aims to set up a new body called Te Matawai, which will lead and direct Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Maori, Te Mangai Paho, and absorb the role of Te Putahi Paoho (Maori Television's Electoral College).

About 50 people, including delegates from Ngai Tahu, Ngapuhi, Waikato-Tainui, Taranaki, as well as representatives from Wananga and Universities, are taking part in a two day Hui Taumata Reo that started on Thursday.

Kaiwhakahaere (organiser) Rahui Papa said people who protected Te Reo were invited to attend the hui, which was set up through the Iwi Chairs network.

He said it was an opportunity for them to look at aspects of the bill, including the concept of Te Matawai, the government's Maori language strategy.

Mr Papa plans to deliver the group's findings to the Maori Affairs Select Committee and the Minister appointed roopu for them to consider as part of their respective reviews.
