Supermarket survivors rescued

10:32 am on 18 January 2010

Three people have been pulled from the rubble of a building in Port-au-Prince.

A girl, aged seven, a man, 34, and a woman, 50, were rescued with only slight injuries, from a supermarket that collapsed in a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday.

Teams from Turkey and the United States are trying to rescue a fourth person there.

Forty three international rescue teams are now in Haiti with 161 sniffer dogs.

They have pulled more than 70 people from mountains of concrete and metal in Port-au-Prince.

A Danish UN worker was pulled alive from the rubble of the UN headquarters on Sunday afternoon. Four other people were rescued during the day.

A New Zealander helping the United Nations coordinate the international aid teams, says there is still hope of reaching trapped people - even though the situation is getting critical.

Sophie Henley was seconded to the UN by Rapid UK, which specialises in rescuing people.

She told Summer Report five days is usually the time limit given for rescue teams to reach people, but if they have water, their chance of survival is much stronger.
