The police say the 31-year-old was working at a property in Trass Valley near Wakefield, about 30 km south of Nelson city.

He was taken to hospital by helicopter but died shortly after.

Worksafe said it was the fourth fatality in forestry this year, following a death in Bulls last week, and another two in Northland and in Marlborough in May.

Mr Omlo's death had been referred to Worksafe and the Coroner.
