They beat Denmark 2-1 in extra time in their European football championship semifinal at Wembley.

Captain Harry Kane scored the winning goal in the 104th minute after England were contentiously awarded a penalty.

At Hotel Bristol, a popular pub on Cuba Street, expats crammed in with tea and toast - or the occasional beer as they watched their teams battle.

Rammed with about 100 people, among them a few brave folk cheering for Denmark, in an overwhelmingly English crowd.

One Dane said this game had an extra special meaning.

"Obviously it's the first time we've been in the semifinals since we won it back in '92, which I still remember. It's a big day. [Going] against England is pretty much as big as it gets."

It had been called a fairytale journey for the team whose best player, Christian Eriksen, had a heart attack on the pitch and nearly died during the first game of the tournament.

Without him they still found their way to the semifinals - but English fans were not going easy.

Seth was proudly displaying his colours.

"We've gone for the old flag and shirt combo, very classic look I feel."

He said making the semifinals was pretty great.

"It's only the second time since 1996. Yeah, we're looking to right a few wrongs today hopefully and make the finals."

The last time England made the semifinals in 1996 it went to penalties. The once player, now manager of the team choked - missing his shot - ending the dream for fans.

But under Gareth Southgate, the team were back in the same position, looking to take victory.

The first half was exciting filled with fast feet, headers and a few hollywoods.

But Denmark scored first, pushing English fans out of their comfortable confidence.

Although for one fan at Hotel Bristol, he was expecting it.

"It's kinda to script for England in important games like this. I've seen this before. So we get super excited and then we can see the goal, fingers crossed, we find a way back into it."

And they did come back, quickly equalising the score for the remainder of the second half - a nervous spot for English fans.

"I just don't want to go to extra time. I can't handle it," one said during the game.

"I'm on the edge of my seat, it's pretty even I'd say," another said.

But others were still confident England would bring it home.

Moving on to extra time, England finally got their moment - captain Harry Kane scored from a controversial penalty, thus ending the fairytale for Denmark.

A moment this English fan would not forget.

"There's a tear in my eye. I never thought we would get to a final ever in my life.

"I thought we weren't going to do it because we never do it. We never do this.

"My dad was around, you know it's '68 when we won, so yeah, it's a good day."

England will play Italy in the final on Monday morning (NZ time), where there is bound to be more of those tears and cheers.
