African culture hits central Christchurch

10:33 am on 2 November 2013

Inner city streets in Christchurch will be filled with performers from 32 different African countries on Saturday, celebrating the continent's many cultures.

The Soul of Africa event, held for the first time last year, is regarded as the largest festival of African culture in New Zealand.

Constable Phil Goto, who is one of the organisers, says Africa has 54 countries and it is fantastic to have 32 of them represented.

The festival this year has the theme of men standing up against domestic violence.

Mr Goto says the event is subtitled "Drumming for the White Ribbon", in conjunction with White Ribbon Day.

Soul of Africa begins at 3pm on Saturday and performances will run until 9.30pm.
