16:41 pm on 1 August 2012

The New Generation Party's William Tongamp has been declared the inaugural Governor of Jiwaka Province after winning the regional seat on preference votes in Papua New Guinea's general election.

Dr Tongamp came from behind to beat the pre-election favourite for the post, the former Health Minister Jamie Maxtone-Graham of the PNG Party.

It's the second win for the New Generation Party and the 106th of the 111 MPs to be declared.

In another result from the newly created Jiwaka province, independent candidate Komun Joe Koim has won Angalimp-South Waghi Open to fill the vacancy created by Jamie Maxtone-Graham choosing to contest Jiwaka Provincial.

It brings the total number of independent MPs to 15.

Meanwhile, a number of appeals have been lodged against election results including in the West Sepik, Morobe and Central Provincial seats, as well as Wabag, Wapenamanda, Kandep and Imbonggu open seats.
