Insurance assessors due to check American Samoa quake claims

Insurance assessors from California are due to arrive in American Samoa this week to double check government damage claims from September's earthquake and tsunami.

The American Samoa Government has submitted a preliminary proof of loss for damages to government buildings and contents from the earthquake to its insurer Lloyds of London and is now awaiting a response.

The assessors will go over all of the damages and make sure that departments have claimed everything covered under the government's insurance policy.

Lima Fiatoa, a project specialist at the Territorial Office for Fiscal Reform, says the amount of damages reported by departments is 7.6 million US dollars.

He says the preliminary proof of loss was submitted during the week of Christmas and it's needed to obtain an advance payment.
