Bid to delay French Polynesia poll foiled

Opposition parties in French Polynesia have failed in their bid to have next month's general elections postponed.

The territorial assembly was dissolved earlier this month to prepare for general elections on May 23.

Five main opposition parties, including the pro-independence Tavini Huira Atira and the Greens, said that left them little time to prepare for the poll.

They suggested mid-June would have been the earliest practical date.

But a tribunal in Paris, the State Council, has rejected these claims, saying the date chosen was not unusual.

State Councillors said the date for voting was in keeping with rules stating elections must take place within three months of the dissolution of the territorial assembly.
