Greater Wellington Regional Council this month chose Tranzit and Uzabus to take over the running of most services.

Masterton-based Tranzit Group has been nominated as preferred tenderer for eight Wellington contracts while Uzabus from Palmerston North was thought likely to take a contract covering Kāpiti.

The drivers, who currently work for Mana Coachlines, are worried the new companies will not pay bonuses for working weekends, nights or overtime, which the union says many drivers rely on to make ends meet.

Buses in Kāpiti, Porirua, and Wellington's northern suburbs will be off the road from 8.45am to 3pm while the drivers hold a union meeting.
