Senior members of Ngāpuhi are meeting today to discuss plans for Waitangi Day and the iwi's contentious Treaty settlement negotiations.
The members met at Te Tii Marae north of Kerikeri today and planned to settle divisions over treaty negotiations, among other issues.
A joint working party was expected to report to the hui about progress being made on moving the settlement forward.
Senior Taitokerau member Shane Jones is at the hui and said it was a good idea for kuia and kaumatua to meet annually.
"Historically, Ngapuhi always met to ensure the north could offer not only good waka regatta, but also good cultural hospitality.
"If it causes everyone to get in behind the process and secure a workable mandate sooner rather than later then the kuia and kaumatua of Ngapuhi would have made an overdue contribution."
