Weekend road toll exceeds Queen's Birthday toll

Four people have died on the country's roads since Friday - exceeding the Queen's Birthday long weekend road toll.

The latest incident was on the Cheltenham Hunterville Road in Manawatū early this morning, where a man died in a single-vehicle crash near the Kiwitia Stream bridge.

Yesterday, two people were killed in a crash involving two vehicles at Marotiri, north of Lake Taupo, about 11am. Another person was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

On Friday evening, one person died when when two vehicles crashed on State Highway 3 at Turakina, south east of Whanganui. Another person was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Just one person died on the roads over the long Queen's Birthday weekend, last week, following a crash on the Waikato Expressway.

The toll was lower than in previous years, with three deaths over Queens Birthday in 2021 and six in 2020.

There was a second death in Canterbury during Queen's Birthday weekend, but the car was 'off road' so is not included in the official toll.
