Govt could override councils on housing if bill passed

16:23 pm on 31 July 2013

The Government is pushing ahead with legislation that would allow it to override local bodies in a push to speed up home construction.

The legislation paves the way for an accord agreed in principle between the Government and the Auckland Council to try to tackle a growing shortage of housing.

The select committee reporting back on the Housing Accord legislation says if an accord breaks down and dispute resolution fails, the Government can take over the issuing of resource consents in a housing development.

Opposition parties are not supporting the revised bill, with Labour saying it doesn't require any of the homes built under fast-track planning rules to be truly affordable.

The legislation is due to be passed in August and the Auckland Council is likely to formally sign an accord with the Government once its 30-year growth plan is finalised.
