Chatham albatross taken off critically endangered list

The Chatham albatross has been taken off the Red List of critically endangered birds.

BirdLife International says the species has been downlisted to vulnerable because there is no longer evidence of ongoing habitat degradation at its one breeding site, The Pyramid rock stack in the Chatham Islands.

Birdlife International says the Chatham albatross is either stable or increasing, with a population of 11,000, but remains vulnerable as it has a very small breeding range.

Meanwhile, the organisation says human actions have brought about the extinction of a species of water bird exclusive to a single lake in Madagascar.

It says the introduction of a carnivorous fish and the use of nylon fishing nets have caused the demise of the Alaotra grebe, found only at Lake Alaotra in eastern Madagascar.
