New Caledonia's criminal court has given jail sentences to four men for last year's aggravated robbery which preceded a fatal incident near Noumea that triggered the territory's worst clashes in years.

The four were in a stolen vehicle with William Decoire who was shot dead by police after he allegedly tried to run over a police officer at a checkpoint near St Louis.

Two of the accused, who had been on remand, have been given custodial sentences while the others had their sentences suspended.

They had stolen the vehicle and committed a raft of burglaries before the shooting incident.

An investigation concluded that Decoire was shot in legitimate self-defence.

Last weekend, a small group marked the first anniversary of the shooting.
