Thomas Springer, 66, was due to be sentenced today in the Kaikohe District Court, for careless driving causing the death of Virginia Keogh and Kylee Rakich, who was eight months pregnant.

The Californian collided head-on with the car on State Highway 10 near Kerikeri last month.

Ms Rakich's sister told the court her whanau had decided to accept the offer of a restorative justice hui with Springer.

Judge Greg Davis remanded Springer for sentencing in a special court hearing next Saturday, saying he had to consider the needs of the tourist, as well as the whanau.

Springer's lawyer has told the court his client had a brain tumour and needed to be back in the United States soon for treatment.

A restorative justice hui has been set down for next week at a Far North marae.
