Police have named 46-year-old Albert James Coe as the man killed in the Rangitikei township of Ōhingaiti at the weekend.

Police said they responded to reports a man had been shot in the settlement located on State Highway 1 between Hunterville and Mangaweka in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He later died in Whanganui Hospital.

A 37-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear at the High Court next month.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the death, but the investigation into what happened is continuing.
