The mission made an urgent plea for donations in the lead-up to 25 December, saying they were worringly low in 2016.

Auckland City Missioner Chris Farrelly said the $1.2 million target was hit on Christmas Eve.

That money should support the mission through not just December, but January and February as well.

Mr Farrelly said the post-Christmas period could be just as busy for the mission, with many people coming to them in need.

The mission is open 365 days a year and Mr Farrelly said during the holiday period it could be one of the few places where people were able to go for help.

Thousands of people went to the mission before Christmas seeking help with food parcels and presents.
