CNMI loses medical director

11:43 am on 19 January 2011

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas' Health Center is losing another physician with the departure of the medical director for public health programs.

Dr. Shirish Balachandra whose contract is expiring middle of next month, was recently notified of the non-renewal of his contract and he is now taking advantage of his unused leave.

Our correspondent says the non-renewal of Dr Balachandra's contract has been described by some as politically motivated.

The health centre is currently under a state of emergency due to a lack of physicians and the quality of services it provides.

It has been cited by Medicare for noncompliance with standards of care.
