American Samoa governor re-election to be officially confirmed

14:14 pm on 18 November 2004

American Samoa's incumbents, Togiola Tulafono and Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia, remain in the governor's office according to preliminary results from yesterday's run-off election.

They won about 1,300 more votes than their opponents, Afoa Moega Lutu and Taeaoafua Dr Meki Solomona.

This translates into 55.7 percent of the vote to their opponents' 44.3 percent.

Our correspondent in American Samoa, Monica Miller says the election saw a high voter turnout.

"This is one of the better voter turnout results we've had compared to previous run off elections. I could see from the figures, we only had less than 635 voters turning out to cast ballots yesterday compared to the general elections. Usually we have a difference of about two thousand to three thousand voters in the run off elections. There were no incidents reported, some late night parties last night but nothing untoward from those celebrations."

Monica Miller says election results will now be certified and officially declared on Tuesday.
