Some of New Zealand's Olympians are celebrating with friends and whānau in person tonight, after being completing their MIQ stint.

The athletes and support crew have had to take the long way home from Tokyo two weeks in isolation in Christchurch before they can see loved ones.

Today before getting on a plane back to their home towns they were treated to a heroes' welcome at the airport.

RNZ cameraman Nate McKinnon and reporter Kim Moodie were there.
