TVNZ to broadcast royal wedding live to Pacific

06:55 am on 8 April 2011

Television audiences in 13 Pacific countries will be able to watch the British royal wedding for free thanks to a transmission deal with TVNZ.

The station's general manager of Maori and Pacific programming says the live coverage of the event, which is in London on the morning of April the 29th, is an extension of TVNZ's Pacific service, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

Paora Maxwell says most of the region's broadcasters are tiny organisations catering for small populations, so TVNZ endeavours to send them any material of international significance.

"Oh they love it. I mean I was in Rarotonga in the weekend and I was with Cook Islands TV with their CEO and any content we can send them is greatly appreciated. So it's something that doesn't cost us anything and we're obligated to send them material anyway so it sort of all works out."
