Editor of Cook Islands News against proposed Media bill

08:25 am on 28 July 2009

The editor of the Cook Islands News, John Woods, says the country's Media Council will fight government attempts to adopt a media bill aimed at introducing licensing.

Mr Woods was speaking at the Pacific Media Summit in Vanuatu about his daily paper's challenges in getting information from government.

He says it is easier for his paper in Rarotonga to obtain cabinet information from Samoa than from the Cook Islands cabinet services.

Mr Woods says as an Official Information Act is now being phased in, but he has just learned that a media bill is now being considered again.

"We will fight that legislation, we will fight resistance to disclosure. And our approach is we can inform and empower our readers that will bring about awareness, which will lead to discussion, which will lead to involvement, engagement in government process."
