Two people, including a 16-year-old, have been arrested following an aggravated robbery in Southland's Mataura.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Baird said the arrests come after an alleged aggravated robbery in Queens Park on 5 March.

Three pre-planned search warrants were undertaken in the area using the Armed Offenders Squad.

Baird said two firearms, ammunition, cannabis and alleged stolen property were found.

As a result, a 39-year-old male was due to appear in Invercargill District Court on Friday on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and cultivation of cannabis.

A 16-year-old male has been referred to Youth Aid in relation to possession of a firearm.

Baird said inquiries were continuing into the alleged robbery and other matters which have come up as a result of the search warrants.

Further arrests were likely, he said.

"Police will continue to zero tolerance to alleged offending by gang members and associates and want to assure members of the local community and public that offenders will be held to account."
