A man has been jailed in French Polynesia for burgling the home of a dead assembly member while his family was attending his wake.

Rony Tumahai, who was also the mayor of Punaauia, died in August.

The 34-year-old burglar, who stole jewellery and about $US40,000 in cash, has been jailed for ten months.

He has also been ordered to repay $US27,000 to the widow and $US5,000 to the couple's son.

The burglar said he was under the influence of a mixture of drugs when he broke into the home and then spent the stolen money on more drugs.
