Google Maps back on iPhone

Google's mapping tool has returned to the iPhone, months after Apple replaced it with its own mapping service that contained embarrassing errors and drew fierce criticism.

Some users were given incorrect directions, while other experienced bizarre map errors.

Police in Australia said the Apple map software is life-threatening as people were getting lost in the desert while navigating with the app.

The public uproar over the shortcomings led Apple chief executive Tim Cook to apologise to customers and even direct them to rival services, Reuters reports.

The company says the free Google Maps app is now available in more than 40 countries.

Google said in June there are 1 billion active monthly users of its map services.
