The Dunedin cyclist Allison Shanks hopes to be back fully training by June, but is unsure whether she'll need surgery to overcome a hip injury which has denied her the chance of defending her individual pursuit world title.

Shanks has withdrawn from next motnh's world champs in Belarus saying she needs to overcome the injury which has been bothering her for the past year.

She says it didn't hamper her performance at the London Olympics where she was part of the team's pursuit, as she's been able to manage the problem through treatment and medication.

However she says knew she would have to take time off from the sport at some stage and expects to be back training fully by the middle of the year.
