Māori angry that officer not charged, says MP

07:53 am on 13 July 2011

The Māori Party's justice spokesperson says she has been deluged with calls from Māori angry that a police officer wasn't charged after his patrol car struck and killed a Northland teenager.

Rawiri Wilson, 16, was hit by the police car as he walked along State Highway 1, near Ohaeawai, about midnight on 25 July 2009.

The Independent Police Complaints Authority found the Kaikohe officer had been phone-texting before he hit Rawiri Wilson.

But the police have laid no charges, on advice from Crown Law.

Māori Party MP Rāhui Katene says the authority's report notes other cars had managed to dodge the teenager and his cousin as they walked on the highway but not the police car.

She says Māori are losing confidence in the police after the decision not to prosecute.

The use of mobile phones while driving was not an offence at the time of the fatal crash, but the police have not explained their reasons for not laying charges.
