The Black Sticks have suffered a 3-2 loss to Malaysia at the men's hockey World Cup in India, sending them into a sudden-death match against the tournament hosts.
New Zealand finish third in their group, having opened the campaign with a 3-1 defeat of Chile, before a 4-0 loss to group winners The Netherlands.
It turned Thursday's final group match against Malaysia into an effective playoff for second and third, with both teams consigned to play in the crossover phase.
The Black Sticks will face India on Sunday, needing victory to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Trailing Malaysia 2-0 heading into the final quarter, they levelled through goals to Hayden Phillips and Sam Lane but Faizal Saari bagged his second goal for Malaysia with three minutes remaining.
England and the Netherlands became the first teams to book quarter-final berths, with two other pools to be concluded on Friday.
