Christchurch Earthquake

Town hall and convention centre closed for a year

A first glimpse has been obtained into the state of the Christchurch Town Hall and the convention centre following the February earthquake.

Early assessments have confirmed structural damage to both venues and neither will open again until early next year at least.

Access to the town hall is hampered by flooding in its basement, which has cut the power supply, making further inspections difficult.

The building has widespread cracking and damage to floors due to liquefaction.

The 'Limes Room' has separated from the main building where silt has extensively damaged the floors.

The convention centre has suffered similar flooring problems from liquefaction, as well as moderate structural damage and widespread superficial damage.

Mayor Bob Parker says it is his absolute goal to ensure protection, restoration and rebuilding take place.
