Hawaiian Air poised to clear American Samoa backlog

16:51 pm on 3 July 2003

Hawaiian Air has promised that once it resumes flights to American Samoa it will provide four flights a week to clear the backlog of passengers and cargo.

The US territory has been without jet flights since last Tuesday after Hawaiian Air stopped its service because of damage caused by debris on the runway at Pago Pago International Airport.

An airline spokesperson, Keoni Wagner, says there'll be an extra weekly flight on Sunday.

Eight tons of mail destined for Pago Pago is still in Honolulu and the US Postal Service is trying to arrange a special charter to deliver the mail.

Hawaiian Air has been cleared to fly to Samoa's Faleolo Airport but the airline says ground handling services are inadequate and there are logistical problems in shuttling passengers to and from Apia on small Twin Otter aircraft.
