Sudan elections 'will not be delayed'

10:34 am on 4 April 2010

The electoral commission in Sudan has dismissed calls by the opposition for the postponement of the country's first multi-party poll in more than two decades.

The commission said the elections would go ahead as planned on 11-13 April.

Many parties have either already withdrawn from the elections or are threatening to withdraw, the BBC says.

A major opposition party, Umma, had set conditions for its participation, including a delay of four weeks for the creation of a new body to supervise the electoral commission.

United States envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration, said members of the electoral commission had made him confident that the elections "would be as free and as fair as possible".
