Woman dies after being assaulted on Grey Lynn street

A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman in Grey Lynn this morning.

Emergency services were called at 8.25am after a member of the public witnessed the woman being allegedly assaulted by a man on Cockburn Street.

The woman was critically injured and died a short time after emergency services arrived.

Police found the man nearby and took him into custody.

"We have launched a homicide inquiry and can confirm the victim and alleged offender were known to each other," Detective Senior Sergeant Lisa Anderson said in a statement.

"While a charge has been filed, our investigation is in its early stages and we are not in a position to provide further detail at this time."

She said cordons remained in place in Cockburn Street while the forensic scene examination continued.

The man is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.
