Doctors in New Caledonia have reacted with dismay to claims they are being assaulted because of their supposed lack of understanding of Pacific culture.

A member of the assembly of the Southern Province, Aloisio Sako, caused an outcry by blaming the doctors for the attacks and insults they endure.

The doctors' professional body issued a statement in response, saying doctors work every day to serve the population without distinction.

It added training in the cultural approach to illness is an integral part of the hospital course for interns.

The statement said a person who is the victim of a violent act does not bear the responsibility.

It also said physical attacks are experienced by doctors of all origins, including those who have been working in New Caledonia for 20 or 30 years.

New Caledonia has seen attacks on medical practices and pharmacies in rural areas, raising concerns about the provision of health care amid a lack of medical practitioners.
