Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aeroplane has successfully completed its first flight.

The aircraft used for Tuesday's test flight will be delivered to Air New Zealand in mid 2014.

The 787-9 is a stretched version of Boeing's high-tech composite plane.

It is designed to carry 290 passengers, 40 more passengers than the current model, the 787-8.

It can also fly longer distances.

The plane landed at Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington, after about five hours in the air testing its control systems.

Air New Zealand has ordered 10 of the 787-9s, each of which has a list price of just over US$249.5 million.
