Work is expected to start on a controversial development at Taikuru - Shelly Bay - next week, after Wellington City councillors voted in favour of selling the land at an eight-hour meeting last night.
Councillors voted nine votes to six to proceed with the sale.
The development has been bogged down with legal battles for years, with filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson one of its most vocal opponents.
An opposing group within Taranaki Whānui, Mau Whenua, strongly opposes the sale and is challenging it in court.
Councillor, Jill Day, who also holds the Māori partnership portfolio ,voted in favour of the sale.
She spoke to Māni Dunlop.
