The man is understood to have taken his own life.

A Kurdish journalist who is among those detained on Manus, Behrouz Boochani said other refugees found the man's body this morning.

Mr Boochani said the man had been sick for a long time.

The Guardian reported the man's body was found in a forested area near the East Lorengau refugee transit centre.

It reported he had been suffering an acute mental health crisis for more than a year.

The Manus provincial police chief, Inspector David Yapu, confirmed the death and said a crime scene had been established.
