The Nigerian parliament has confirmed the candidate chosen by President Goodluck Jonathan to become his deputy.
In a stormy session, Namadi Sambo - the governor of the northern state of Kaduna - was confirmed as vice-president.
The BBC reports Mr Sambo is seen as weak and inexperienced in his home state of Kaduna. His administration is criticised as corrupt.
However, he is a northerner who maintains the regional balance.
President Jonathan, a southerner, was sworn in earlier this month after the death of Umaru Yar'Adua.
