Kurariki bailed despite police, probation opposition

A district court judge has remanded Bailey Junior Kurariki at large despite acknowledging he has a history of offending while on bail.

Mr Kurariki, one of New Zealand's youngest convicted killers, faces charges including indecent assault, assaulting a prison officer and breach of bail.

He failed to appear in Manukau District Court on Thursday and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police and the Probation Service opposed his appeal for bail, but the judge said Mr Kurariki had breached bail in the past, but it was the first time he had done so on his latest charges.

The police prosecutor asked for a 24-hour curfew, but the judge said that was too strict, and imposed a curfew of 7pm to 7am.

Arrest

Mr Kurariki was due on Thursday to face two charges of indecent assault against two female journalists from the Herald on Sunday with a further charge of attempt to insult or offend.

However, his lawyer said Mr Kurariki had told his probation officer he was too sick to attend. The police prosecutor said if he was well enough to see his probation officer he was well enough to be in court and requested a warrant to arrest.

Mr Kurariki was 12 when he was involved in the killing of pizza deliverer Michael Choy in 2001. He was convicted of manslaughter.
