Iran has hanged a man convicted of spying for Israel.

The prosecutor's office in Tehran says Ali Akbar Siadat supplied the Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, with classified information about Iranian missiles and military bases.

The Irna news agency says he confessed to receiving almost $US60,000 from Israel.

Irna said he was in contact with Mossad for several years.

He was arrested in 2008, when he tried to leave Iran with his wife.

Espionage is punishable by death under Iranian law. The BBC reports an Iranian telecoms engineer, Ali Ashtari, was hanged in 2008 after being convicted of spying for Mossad.
