A homicide investigation has been launched in Gisborne after a woman was shot dead at a house.
Police said they were called to a residential property in Centennial Crescent in the suburb of Te Hapara at about 3.45am this morning after reports a woman had a gunshot injury.
When police arrived at the house, the woman was found to have died.
"We are in the very early stages of this investigation, and we're focused on piecing together the events leading up to the death of our victim," Eastern District crime services manager Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said in a statement.
There would be a considerable police presence in the area in the coming days as a forensic examination took place, de Lange said.
Cordons are in place on Centennial Crescent and officers will be speaking to people in the area.
